The Nigerian Presidency has urged Chinese tech company – Huawei, to educate social media users on the responsible use of digital platforms.
The Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Media, Mr Tunde Rahman, said this in Lagos, during a Huawei Cloud Media Workshop, with the theme, “Unlock New Efficiency with Huawei Cloud,” organized by the Chinese company.
Hitherto, media executives had lauded Huawei’s digital storage platform.
In his keynote address, Rahman said: “Huawei should go beyond showing us innovative solutions and demonstrations of its IT capabilities to educating social media users on responsible usage.”
While noting that he does not subscribe to calls for regulation of social media, the presidential aide said that the way to go was by constant engagements with the young ones.
According to him: “The focus of this event with the theme: ‘Unlock New Efficiency, with Huawei Cloud,’ is very appropriate and auspicious in this digital era, where the internet, and not just the media, entertainment, and business are part of our lives.”
“The way we live, the way we communicate, the way we collaborate and live with one another are concerned. Talking about the internet, just yesterday, we had the National Security Adviser (NSA), talk about the dangers and negative use of the media. They saw the internet and social media as a focal area. I don’t know if we would have the time at this forum to look deep into the dangers, in the use of the internet and social media and how to to ensure that we minimize this danger.”
Huawei, Rahman said, had demonstrated its expertise in ICT, which can help take us on this journey to digital efficiency.
He added that the company’s expertise in technology was on display at this year’s mobile world congress in February in Barcelona Spain.
He stressed that Huawei was at that congress with its innovative solutions, noting that Huawei is on a sound footing as it is deploying its company’s module and solution to redefine the media digital space in Nigeria.
The Executive Director, of Nigerian Television Authority, Mr. Lawal Ahmed, applauded Huawei for its commitment to empowering media organizations in Nigeria through innovative solutions.
He noted that the Nigerian media, needed Huawei Cloud and other innovative solutions to be able to compete globally and showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage to the world.
“I envisioned a future where Nigeria media will be at the forefront of digital innovation, producing content that is not only informative and engaging but culturally relevant and impactful. I see a future where our media organization are able to reach global audience and tell our story,” he said
Earlier in his address of welcome, Huawei Cloud Manager, Mr. Hugo, said that its cloud solutions had the potentials to transform Nigeria’s media and entertainment industry.
The Cloud Solution Architect, Mr Jimoh Ehi Okoh, said that Huawei ventured into the cloud about seven years ago.
“Since we ventured into cloud, we have been growing. At the moment, we are the fasted growing in the world because of the adoption rate of our product around the world. We are number two in China, number five globally and this is not our rating. We provide services to over 170 countries, more than 200 services at the moment,” he said.
