Most Viral Memes of 2024—They say laughter is the best medicine; in 2024, we must have been sick to the point of death with all the medicine we were taking.

It would be an understatement to say that memes are the most consumed entertainment. They’re everywhere; you can't go 5 seconds without stumbling on an Aki or Pawpaw meme.

They’ve become such a staple in our society that they could even be traded as currency (where my crypto traders at *wink wink *)

Our days wouldn't be complete without them. So it’s only fitting we go down memory lane and look at the Most Viral Memes of 2024. Let us know which one was your favorite

1. No Gree For Anybody

This was the slogan for the year, a phrase that sparked chaos and triggered rebellion among the people. The Nigerian police force made it popular by stating that the slogan aimed to trigger a revolution in the country.

And that was exactly what it did. The phrase reminds us not to let anyone bully or try to intimidate us, make us give everyone gbas for gbos.

2. God Abeg

This was practically the anthem for 2024 because ;God really abeg!'. The origin of this saying can be traced back to the pre-historic ages, when cavemen probably gathered around in circles, doing ritualistic dances and chanting to a god to give them food…. probably.

Anyways, insert this meme anytime you want to beg God for anything beyond your power.

3. Insha Allah, I Will Be There

Because really, where else should you be? The meme originated from popular skit maker Lasisi as he commits to attend an event, perfectly embodying the concept of “African man time,” making the entire video so much more relatable and funny.

The meme can be used for anything from promising to be at a lecture by 8 am, knowing fully well that you'd still be in bed watching your opposing football team’s downfall.

4. Chill Guy

You don't do too much because you're just a chill guy. This is what most of us think we are till we realize that we're too problematic and unhinged to be chill, but let's keep trying.

A chill guy is basically calm, collected, composed, and doesn't give a **** type of guy, all of which you are not, but luckily can fake till you make it.

5. Very Demure, Very Mindful

Do you see how I act like a well-adjusted member of society? Very demure, very mindful. The phrase gained popularity on TikTok through beauty influencer Jools Lebron. Basically, Jools has explained that being “demure” and “mindful” means looking “very presentable” at work and showing up early at the airport for vacation. It’s also about being “very cutesy,” “very respectful,” and “not doing too much.”

5. Shey You Dey Whine Me?

Shey you dey whine me niiiii?? The phrase became viral on TikTok when the music video of superstar Ogoni singer Austine Emmanuel - Shey you dey whine me, resurfaced.

The phrase simply means, “You’ve got to be kidding me,” or better yet, "Is this tomfoolery by chance meant to wind with my intellect?”

6. Take what belongs to Ceaser

In 2024, Nigerians decided that they no longer wanted to give to Ceaser what belonged to him, instead to go stretch forward and not only “Take what belonged to Ceaser,” but to “Eat their cake and have it” to “Run faster than their shadow,” to “Bite more and chew it,” “Cut their coat oversized“ and in all, to give thanks to the Lord.

Use this meme when you feel like doing something wey big pass you.

6. Who Dey Breathe

An evolution of “E Choke,” coined by popular singer Davido. Who dey breathe is a Nigerian slang that can be used in a variety of contexts, It can be used to call attention to an accomplishment, to humble haters, to accompany a show-off, to signal dominance. Or it could literally mean who is breathing? Because times are choking.

7. No Panic

This came out from wherever it did during the second half of 2024, but the details don't matter. The phrase means to literally not panic; it usually comes after “Dem go whine you,” which means challenges or problems can come your way, but don't panic.

For instance, "Your lecturer go use test whine you, but no panic, na A you go still get for the result.”

Use this meme when you want to console yourself or remain in a state of delulu with your problems.

8. Oya You Don Catch Me

Perfectly encapsulated by the image of Tom from Tom and Jerry, where he’s lifting his hands in humble surrender, “Oya you don catch me” means exactly what it says. You've caught me, you've won, the jig is up, I no fit whine you again.

Use this when you have been red-handedly caught but still want to maintain your steeze and aura.

Conclusion
