Ibadan fanfare tragedy: Tinubu expresses grief, urges investigation, First Lady commiserates with Oyo Govt, deceased’s families

President Bola Tinubu has expressed grief over the tragic incident at the Children’s Yuletide fanfare in Ibadan on Wednesday, in which 35 children reportedly died in a stampede.

The president extended hearty condolences to the government and people of Oyo State, as well as the grieving families who lost their beloved children.

This was contained in a statement by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

“In this moment of mourning, President Tinubu stands in solidarity with the affected families and offers prayers that the Almighty God will grant peace to the souls of those who have departed in this unfortunate event,” the statement said.

The president has, however, ordered urgent investigation into the incident.

“President Tinubu has urgently directed the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances of this tragedy thoroughly.”

Tinubu who stressed that it was imperative to find out whether negligence or deliberate actions contributed to the tragedy, called on relevant authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in their investigations.

He urged the Oyo State Government to take every necessary measure with a view to preventing recurrence of such tragedy in future.

“Among the essential actions are a comprehensive review of all public events’ safety measures, strict enforcement of safety regulations and regular safety audits of event venues,” the statement added.

“Furthermore, President Tinubu calls on event organisers to prioritise the safety of all attendees, especially children.”

The president who also stressed the importance of integrating professional security, protocol, and logistics at events to ensure utmost safety of all participants, noted: “Our children’s safety and wellbeing remain paramount. No event should ever compromise their safety or take precedence over their lives.”

Also, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has sympathized with the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, and the people of Oyo State on the tragedy.

“I sympathize with the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased. I also pray for speedy recovery and total healing for those in the hospital. May the Lord grant peace to Oyo State, comfort to the families who have lost their loved ones, and hope to those grieving at this time. My heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this devastating incident,” the First Lady said.
