Hardship, insecurity:Man attempts suicide, climbs 120-metre radio mast in Abuja

A young man from Borno State, Shuaib AlhajibYusuf, on Monday, attempted to take his life if government failed to proffer solution to insecurity in some parts of the North and also restore fuel subsidy which removal by President Tinubu’s administration has led to hardship in the country.

He also gave other conditions to government before he climbed the mast.

Yusuf had climbed the 120 metre broadcast mast at Katampe and threatened to fall down if his demands were not met.

The Aso Radio reporter who covered the incident live, said in a commentary that Yusuf had climbed up to 100 metres before the team from FCT Emergency Management Department, led by their acting General Manager, Florence Wenegieme, arrived the scene.

D’Gallery gathered that Wenegieme was able to persuade him to come down.

A hand written note he had left before climbing stated: “On behalf of fellow Nigerians, I demand the following:1 Government should return fuel subsidy 2.Government should declare state of emergency in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger and Borno on insecurity matters and take immediate action to clear these terrorists in the above listed states and the country at large. 3.Government should open borders for food importation in order to eradicate food shortage in the country. 4.Government should immediately respond to the problem of out of school children which is increasing rapidly.”

“These are the major Nigerians’ (sic) problems and I am ready to sacrifice my life for the solution to them,” he concluded

He added: “I am calling for (sic) Nigerians to join me in this not.” (sic).

Before he agreed to come down, Wenegieme dissuaded him from committing suicide.

The police men who arrived the scene, took him away, but has not issued any official statement as at the time of filing this report.
