The House of Representatives have resolved to fulfil their promise to sacrifice half of their annual salaries to assist vulnerable Nigerians in the wake of the economic hardship triggered by the removal of petrol subsidy by President Tinubu’s administration.
According to them, the offer would be actualized on December 31, 2024 and continue for six months.
At a plenary on Thursday (yesterday), the Speaker, Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, confirmed that N704.9m had been contributed from the reps’ N600,000 monthly salary.
He told the House that on December 31, 2924, he would lead a delegation of leadership to hand over the money to Tinubu for the vulnerable Nigerians.
Recall that the gesture is sequel to the adoption of a motion moved during a plenary by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, in July.
While moving the motion, Kalu had said: “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 percent for six months. Our salary is N600,000 a month. I plead that we let go of 50 percent of our salary for six months.”
At a plenary on Thursday (yesterday), the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, said: “If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704, 907, 578.82
“On December 31, I will lead a delegation of leadership to hand over the money to the President for the exclusive use of the vulnerable Nigerians who need it.
“The contributions you made highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians,” Abbas said.
