ECOWAS commends Ghana on peaceful elections, congratulates president-elect, Mahama

The Economic Community of West African States Commission (ECOWAS),
on Sunday, congratulated the people of Ghana for conducting a successful presidential elections on Saturday (December 7, 2024).

The President, Dr Omar Touray, who extended the congratulations and praised the smooth transition of power,
lauded the democratic commitment and maturity demonstrated throughout the electoral process.

Touray congratulated Ghana’s ex- presiden, John Mahama, on his electoral victory and lauded Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his statesmanship in conceding defeat promptly.

“The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr Omar Touray, congratulates the Ghanaian people on their successful and generally peaceful elections,” he said.

“The president of the Commission also congratulates His Excellency, John Mahama on his victory.

“The president equally commends Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his timely concession, which demonstrates his statesmanship and love for country,” a statement from the commission read.

Mahama, the National Democratic Congress candidate, won the country’s presidential election after his main opponent, Bawumia conceded defeat.

According to AFP, the Election Commission said the official results might be announced by Tuesday.

The defeat in Saturday’s election ends two terms in power for the governing New Patriotic Party under President Nana Akufo-Addo, marked by Ghana’s worst economic crisis in years, involving high inflation and a debt default.
