Conspiracy allegation: NLC mobilises workers for Ajaero’s visit to police

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its members across the country to embark on a peaceful prayer procession on Thursday, following his visit to police to answer questions on charges of alleged “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion and cybercrime.”

The General Secretary of the congress, Emmanuel Ugboaja, disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday in a letter addressed to all its affiliates and state councils.

The letter, titled: “Mobilisation for Peaceful Procession and Prayer Session in Solidarity,” follows an invitation by the police for NLC President Joe Ajaero to appear for interrogation on charges of alleged “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.”

According to Ugboaja, the procession is a response to what the NLC perceives as trumped-up charges against Ajaero.

He added that the procession was a mark of solidarity and to hold a prayer session until the interrogation is concluded.

Ugboaja said the procession would be peaceful, but if Ajaero is detained, workers would proceed on a nationwide strike.

“We call on all NLC affiliates and state councils to mobilise their members in Abuja and across the states to show solidarity,” the letter said.

“All Central Working Committee members resident in Abuja and other members are expected to assemble at the National Headquarters of the NLC by 8:00 a.m. on 29th August.

“This is to accompany the President to the police for the scheduled interaction,” he said.

He added that those in the state capitals should gather at their respective state secretariats of the Congress.

The secretary, also urged members to embark on a peaceful procession to their state police headquarters, where they are expected to hold a prayer session until the president’s interaction with the police is over.

“This peaceful march is a united stand against the unjust actions aimed at intimidating our leadership and stifling the voice of Nigerian workers.

“We urge all members to remain peaceful and orderly throughout the procession and prayer session. If for any reason the President is detained, all workers nationwide shall proceed on an indefinite strike.

“Your unwavering support and solidarity at this critical time are crucial to defending civil rights and the integrity and rights of the labour movement.

“Together, we shall overcome these challenges and continue to uphold justice, fairness, and democracy in our dear nation,” he said.
