Cholera: Oyo State Govt rolls out prevention measures in public schools

Following the outbreak of cholera in some states across the country where the death toll is on the rise, especially in Lagos, the Oyo State Government has rolled out prevention measures in public schools across the state.

The government has advised school management to ensure that food handlers adhere to strict hygiene practices to prevent contamination.

The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran disseminated the instruction today in Ibadan, the state capital.

He also enjoined parents, guardians and school authorities to follow safety measures.

Adediran said that the government was poised to ensure that schools do the needful to ensure the health and safety of students.

He assured that the government would work with Education Secretaries, head teachers and other stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with prevention and safety measures.

While advocating the importance of hand hygiene, Asediran advised that children should be in possession of hand sanitisers and wash their hands frequently with soap and water, especially before meals and after using the restroom.

Dr. Adeniran also recommended that schools keep Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) available in school clinics to manage dehydration cases promptly and to notify the state emergency hotline, 615, immediately in case of any health emergencies or suspected cholera cases.

He also said that other preventive measures such as comprehensive health talks on cholera prevention among students/pupils, staff as well as safe drinking water practices, would be conducted regularly.
