An Allied Air Cargo aircraft with registration number 5N JRT on Wednesday skidded off the runway 22 of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after it suffered a tyre burst.
The five people on board who escaped death were safely evacuated and taken to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) clinic for medical attention. The incident occurred when the plane, while arriving Abuja, was trying to land.
The incident caused serious disruptions and departure delays as the airport authorities worked assiduously to clear the affected runway.
This was confirmed by in a press statement on Wednesday by the FAAN Director and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah.
“At 10:05 am on December 11, 2024, an allied cargo aircraft with registration number 5N JRT skidded off Runway 22 at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja with five souls on board with no reported injury. They were all safely evacuated and taken to the FAAN clinic for further checks,” Orah said.
The director disclosed that airport emergency response team as well as emergency investigators were on the scene as the runway was being cleared and expected to be reopened for operations as soon as possible.
