Barbados declares singer Rihanna a national hero at its republican celebration

Barbados has declared singer Robyn Rihanna Fenty, better known as Rihanna, a national hero during its republican celebrations in Bridgetown.

Pesident-elect Dame Sandra Mason is set to become head of state after the country announced last year it would abolish its ties to the monarchy.

Rihanna attended the declaration of the republic and inauguration ceremony for Mason in her hometown of Bridgetown on Tuesday, November 30.

The honour of National Hero of Barbados was bestowed on her by prime minister, Mia Mottley.
