The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has suspended two of its ministers over allegations of homosexuality.
The development is sequel to viral allegations of homosexuality after a popular blog Gistlover unveiled a list of prominent Nigerians allegedly involved.
The affected ministers RCCG ministers involved in the allegation are Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa.
This is contained in an internal memo dated 28th October 2024 and signed by RCCG National Overseer, Pastor Sunday Akande, titled: “RCCG Suspends Two Pastors Amidst Homosexuality Allegations.”
Akande informed the ministry’ Special Assistant to the General Overseer on Administration of the decision to temporarily relieve the accused of their duties, pending the outcome of the investigation.
He directed the Special Assistant to ensure a meticulous probe of the allegation.
While expressing the church’s uncompromising commitment to upholding its doctrine and biblical principles, Akande noted:
“Our mission is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible, and we must address these allegations with the seriousness they deserve.”
“The RCCG’s stance on homosexuality is based on passages such as Leviticus 18:22, which describes same-sex relations as an “abomination,” and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which warns that the “unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God,” he added.
“For RCCG, adhering to these principles is seen as a core part of its mission,” Akande added.
Akande who also called for the handling of the investigation with confidentiality and respect for all the involved parties, stated that the church’s leadership had requested that the investigation be concluded within two weeks.
He also instructed that during the period of the allegation, AdeBello, Mayowa, and any others allegedly involved should stop participating in any church activities, pending the outcome of the investigation.
“This is a matter of integrity and adherence to our values,” he said.
“This is not the first time RCCG has encountered challenges related to doctrinal adherence. As one of Nigeria’s largest Christian organisations, RCCG has frequently addressed issues it perceives as contrary to its values, prioritising discipline and strict adherence to its interpretation of biblical morality,” Akande stressed.
