FCCPC evacuates expired rice, shuts down Abuja supermarket

The officials of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), have evacuated bags of rice filled with weevils from all the branches of 4U Supermarket in Abuja.

The Commission made the move on Thursday afternoon over aspiration of the product and because it was being sold in the supermarket years after the companies had stopped production.

The Commission also took action because the price displayed on the weevil-laden 10kg bag of rice was N19,000.

The affected products which included 5kg and 10kg of Caprice and stallion rice were produced in August 2022 and October 2022.

The Acting Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, Adamu Abdullahi, who led the raid, said: “It was shocking that Caprice and stallion rice were still stocked and being sold in the supermarket years after the companies had stopped production.

While expressing disappointment at what it described as “obnoxious practices” being undertaken by the management of the supermarket, the FCCPC noted that the integrity of products being sold at 4U Supermarket could no longer be guaranteed, as it exposes consumers to unsafe products.

As a result, the FCCPC sealed up branches of 4U Supermarket for hiding the rice at its headquarters and for duping and misleading Nigerians.

The General Manager of the Supermarket, Yunusa Yusuf, promised to expose the suppliers.

He, however, pledged to henceforth abide by the FCCPC’s regulations on consumer rights to avoid future occurrences.
