Conditions to pass Constitution review bills, by Speakers

Nigeria’s Presidents Council has vowed not to enact the 44 amendments to the constitution that the House of Assembly has submitted to them until the four proposed laws are approved. The four bills requested by the president include the one on the state police.

The Chairman of the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Constitutional Review, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege disclosed this during a briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.

It was organized by the National Assembly’s Committee on Constitutional Amendment, but the chairman of the ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives on Constitutional Amendment, Ahmed Idris Wase, was not present during the meeting.

. Omo-Agege, the Deputy Speaker of the Senate, said he had the blessing of Hon. Idris Wase, who is from the country serving the country, to continue the conference. He lamented that only 11 states have considered and fulfilled their mandated obligations of adopting constitutional changes. the remaining 25 states will ratify the amendment.

He described the letter as “the hand of Esau and the voice of Jacob” saying that state governors support what the presidents have done. Senate President Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir, Senate President Orji Uzor Kalu, Deputy Senate President Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi and Deputy Criminal Senator Chukwuka Utazi. The briefing was held in the presence of Comrade Ayuba Wabba, the president of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
